World Rally 2008 Review
Uploaded on Feb 09, 2009 Adam Duke / Duke Videos Footage Type: Consumer or DVD Restrictions: Only authorised users may download"This DVD demonstrates why it remains a great sport........the North One footage is exceptional and comes from all angles" Autosport
The Official Review of the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship brings you action and drama from all 15 rounds of what proved to be a truly record-breaking season, packed with thrills, spills and spectacular skills.
Citroen superstar Sebastien Loeb not only claimed a record-breaking fifth World Rally Championship title, he also re-wrote the record book along way, including becoming the first driver in WRC history to win 11 events in one season, win the same event seven times in a row, the first to win the Monte-Carlo rally five times and in Argentina four times.
He dominated the 2008 season, proving his skills in all conditions and on every terrain.
Loeb wasn't the only record-breaker. Title rival Mikko Hirvonen, who headed the championship battle early in the season, became the first driver to score points in every single round. Ford teammate Jari-Matti Latvala also claimed his place in history when he became the youngest person ever to win a WRC event.
The best camera angles, plus plenty of on-board and in-car footage, bring you all the vital action, controversy and shocking smashes from another dramatic season. The bizarre head-on crash which forced Loeb out of the inaugural Jordan rally, Gigi Galli's leg-breaking smash, the demanding frozen stages of Rally GB, the exceptional consistency of Hirvonen on snow, gravel, tarmac, ice and mud - every essential moment is here.
This was also the year the WRC bid a fond farewell to an icon - the Subaru Impreza saloon which had been a popular fixture for 15 years. At the Acropolis Rally the familiar Impreza was replaced by the new-look hatchback version, and we join team boss David Richards and drivers Chris Atkinson and Petter Solberg for a close-up look at the new challenger, as well as a look back at its predecessor.
"The World Rally Championship might not have featured the closest finish in the world last season, but this DVD demonstrates why it remains a great sport. Check out any of the Jari-Matti Latvala in-car, particularly the monster moment mid-way through a snowy left-hander that could have cost him his maiden WRC win in Sweden. And then there's Finland, for the biggest battle of the year. As engaging as the Loeb-Hirvonen scrap is, you'll simply never tire of watching these cars flying for mile after mile. And the highlight of that highlight is undoubtedly Toni Gardemeister escaping from the biggest of moments in fourth gear - you won't stop rewatching that one for a long time. Given that Gardemeister and Suzuki (and Subaru, of course) are now part of WRC past, it's worth buying this film as a record of the SX4 WRC's sole season at the highest level. As you'd expect, the North One footage is exceptional and comes from all angles - with wicked amateur footage neatly stitched in" Autosport
Raining Champions
Uploaded on Dec 07, 2009 Adam Duke / Duke Videos Footage Type: Consumer or DVD Restrictions: Only authorised users may downloadExperience three wonderfully evocative films showing a golden age of road racing, when the Armoy Armada and Dromara Destroyers did battle on the circuits of Northern Ireland.
These archive gems, which featured in the celebrated TV series “Charge of the Bike Brigade”, bring you action from 11 gripping races, plus interviews with the stars and more. Newly-filmed introductions featuring TAS Racing team owner Hector Neill, road racing commentary giant Derek ‘Big D’ Mason and racing legend Tommy Robb bring a new appreciation to three classic confrontations, perfectly setting the scene before we are treated to truly historic showdowns.
Among the heroes seen in action are the original Dromara Destroyer Ray McCullough, Armoy Armada stars Joey Dunlop, Frank Kennedy and Mervyn Robinson, plus Mick Grant, Percy Tait, Tony Rutter, Charlie Williams, Stan Woods, Tom Herron, Abe Alexander and a young Steve Parrish.
Raining Champions charts the 1976 North West 200, bringing you highlights of four enthralling dices on the wet roads of County Antrim, including the amazing battle between the works entries from Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha and the heroics of the British Spartans. This was the first year of the Magic Roundabout, and we eavesdrop as Grant and Rutter discuss the course and the potential dangers of this new feature. The Embassy Final 1975 takes us to the Kirkistown circuit, and the exceptional colour footage treats us to some amazingly close racing – not least the showdown between McCullough and Dunlop. Finally, we travel to Dundrod for the 1975 Ulster Grand Prix and action from four races – including the first ever Superbike race at the Ulster. It is packed with history, including McCullough’s domination of the 350cc race, Tait’s emotional superbike win, the dramatic rain-hit 500cc contest and McCullough turning out for the 250cc on a Harley Davidson!
Filmed specially for this DVD are two fascinating features. In the first, Trevor Steele, an original member of the Dromara Destroyers, talks about the rivalry with the Armoy Armada. In the second, important racing figures past and present – including Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness, World Superbike Champion James Toseland and multiple Duke Road Race Rankings champion Ryan Farquhar – reflect on the impact of road racing in the 1970s.
Paris Dakar Rally 1989
Uploaded on Apr 13, 2009 Adam Duke / Duke Videos Footage Type: Consumer or DVD Restrictions: Only authorised users may downloadThe Paris-Dakar Rally is one of the last great motorsport adventures, travelling thousands of miles through the most challenging terrain on Earth. In 1989 the teams departed Paris on Christmas Day for a 20-day expedition which would travel almost 11,000kms across seven countries.
Ari Vatanen and Dakar veteran Jacky Ickx would lead the Peugeot charge, pushing the 405 T16 to the limit across the treacherous African landscape, chased throughout by the Mitsubishi Pajeros. The Mitsubishi team, which featured Andrew Cowan and Grand Prix star Patrick Tambay, endured a testing Dakar Rally, with poor quality fuel and reliability problems denting hopes of victory. Despite the setbacks, Tambay produced an awesome performance which kept the Peugeots under pressure.
Although the result was clouded by controversy following the imposition of Peugeot team orders, the three-way battle between Vatanen, Ickx and Tamaby makes for dramatic viewing.
In the motorcycle section, Honda and Yamaha renewed their Dakar rivalry in 1989, with five-time winner Cyril Neveu swapping teams to head the Yamaha challenge. Stephane Peterhansel was the dominant early leader, but the battle for victory came down to the Yamaha of Franco Picco and Honda’s Gilles Lalay.
Dramatic footage from throughout the 20-day adventure brings you all the danger and drama of the Dakar Rally as it crosses Libya for the first time and once again endures the hardships of the Tenere Desert. Commentary courtesy of rally co-driving legend Tony Mason and interviews with the big names ensure you experience the full story of the 1989 Dakar Rally.
Paris Dakar Rally 1988
Uploaded on Apr 13, 2009 Adam Duke / Duke Videos Footage Type: Consumer or DVD Restrictions: Only authorised users may downloadThe Paris-Dakar Rally is one of the last great motorsport adventures, travelling thousands of miles through the most challenging terrain on Earth. The event marked its 10th anniversary in 1988, but controversy and tragedy marred what should have been a celebration.
Ari Vatanen, victor in 1987, was favourite to win with the awesome Peugeot 405. Despite challenges from the Land Rovers, the Mitsubishi Pajeros and fellow Peugeot driver Juha Kankkunen, the double World Rally Champion dominated until the bizarre and controversial events in Bamako, when Vatanen’s car disappeared, along with his hopes of triumphing. Despite the contentious conclusion to the 1988 Dakar Rally, the 13,000km, 22-day odyssey across six countries provided some amazing racing, featuring the likes of Andrew Cowan, Patrick Tambay, Jacky Ickx and Henri Pescarolo.
Dakar legends Cyril Neveu and Gaston Rahier once again headed the entry in the motorcycle battle, but the victory would be fought out between Edi Orioli and Franco Picco in a dramatic contest.
The organisers had designed one of the most demanding routes ever for the 10th anniversary, and it proved too much for many – the 600-strong field was decimated on the very first day in Africa. Tragically, the tough terrain took a heavy toll, claiming the lives of competitors and leaving many, including Motocross legend Andre Malherbe, badly injured.
This review features action-packed highlights from a year which will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, plus interviews with the stars as the event – and the controversy – unfolds.
Paris Dakar Rally 1984
Uploaded on Mar 09, 2009 Adam Duke / Duke Videos Footage Type: Consumer or DVD Restrictions: Only authorised users may downloadThe Paris-Dakar Rally is one of the last great motorsport adventures, travelling thousands of miles through the most challenging terrain on Earth. In 1984, the event became a race for survival as the harsh conditions and tough environment decimated the field.
This action-packed review follows the 12,000km odyssey as 426 cars, motorcycles and trucks navigate eight countries in 20 drama-filled days. Share the triumph and tragedy as the teams encounter rocks, sand, dust, jungles and rivers in an energy-draining expedition which would see just 148 machines make the finish line in Dakar.
A trio of specially-adapted Porsche 911s led the way, with 1983 winner Jacky Ickx starting as favourite. Electrical problems hampered his bid for victory, but set the scene for an enthralling fight back. Among the challengers were the sportscar great Jochen Mass, driving veteran Vic Elford, the heroic Marreau brothers, Mitsubishi's Andrew Cowan, the Pacific Range Rover of Patrick Zaniroli and Ickx's own teammate Rene Metge. The bike section was also a star-studded affair, with BMW's challengers Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier dominating.
Stunning footage captures the spirit of adventure as the cars, bikes and trucks battle with the terrain, while interviews with the stars take you behind the scenes of the spirit-breaking Dakar Rally. Join the battle-scarred machines - and competitors - from the baking heat of the Saharan days to the freezing temperatures of the African mountains.
