British Rally Championship 2011 - Round 1 News

It was a visibly elated David Bogie and Kevin Rae that crossed the finish ramp in Bournemouth to claim victory in the first round of the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship, Rallye Sunseeker International. This follows his victory on the Scottish Championship last weekend.

They came home 21.8 seconds ahead of Tom Cave and Craig Parry in the JRM Mitsubishi after a day long battle between the pair all day. David said at the finish "It’s been a really good day here, and although we had a few scares along the way it was a great battle with Tom.

Welshman Tom Cave along with Parry was delighted to finish as runner up to Bogie and felt that a steady approach had paid off "Its a tough rally, and you need to be on the pace from the start, but any kind of mistake would leave you struggling to catch up here, so Yeah we are happy with our day today".

Another Welshman who took a steady approach to claim 3rd o/a was Elfyn Evans, the Pirelli Star Driver increasing his pace as he gained confidence and experience in the car during the day and felt that he had made progress throughout the day in the forests of Bournemouth and Poole. He had been locked himself in a battle with Adam Gould, also in a Subaru from the very first stage of the morning.

Gould too was content to come home 4th, and felt that it bodes well for the rest of the year in the Dulux Trade Championship.

Daniel Barry and Rory Kennedy came home 5th o/a in the JRM Mitsubishi, and felt that lack of seat time perhaps hindered his event. He said "It was a new car for us, and we spent the first loop making small changes in the car, but this event is so intense that to give any time away at all, leaves you with a lot to do to make up".

Following Barry home, were the Skoda S2000 crews of Jonny Greer and Dai Roberts and Robert Barrable and Damien Connolly respectively. The cars caused huge interest on the event and both drivers admitted to taking it easy and bringing the car home. Jonny said "It’s a new car for us, and although we have been to Sunseeker before, this time it was about learning the car and not doing anything silly, so Yee-ha! We are happy with a good solid finish"

Equally Robert Barrable and Damien Connolly were more than happy with their result, Damien saying at the finish "There is so much more to come from the car, there really is. We only picked the car up on Wednesday, so we have had no seat time what so ever. Very happy with today"

Dulux Trade MSA British Formula 2 Rally Championship

Siim Plangi took a maiden victory in the Dulux Trade MSA British Formula 2 Rally Championship here in Bournemouth, after a day long battle with team mate Mikko Pajunen in the Renault Twingo R2. It would have been a much closer finish between them had Pajunen not picked up a 30sec penalty earlier in the day. The crowds of spectators however were treated to some spectacular driving between the pair all day and it was one of the talking points of the rally. It was a great battle and certainly bodes well for the rest of the year.

For his exploits though on Rallye Sunseeker International, Plangi was nominated as Pirelli Star driver.

Callum Black joined them on the podium, having struggled a bit earlier in the days with conditions and tyre choice. Callum though was happy to take 3rd and said "It turned out ok in the end, because as the day progressed and we got more time in the car, our choices were better, so it really does look good for the rest of the year, and the car is home in one piece"

Craig Breen and Gareth Roberts had problems during the day, which meant that despite a promising start and some fastest stage times, they could not make up the several minutes lost early in the morning.

Nick Cristofaro and Daniel O Brien also overcame minor issues during the day to finish the event. Both the Citroens of Desi Henry and Mark Donnelly retired during the day.

Finally, the Organisers of Rallye Sunseeker International would like to say a BIG Thank You to all those involved in the event. From event Sponsors, Stewards, Marshalls, the Media, the Police, and Emergency Services, the local people in Bournemouth and Poole, Spectators, the local residents on the Stages and Rally route and everyone else involved in any way on this years event for your help, co-operation and support.

There were two winners from this weekend’s International Rally Yorkshire: Gwyndaf Evans/Claire Mole took overall honours on the Scarborough-based gravel event, but Keith Cronin took his second straight victory in the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship, the first for his co-driver Barry McNulty.

Evans’ win was a relatively easy one, but only after Craig Breen/Gareth Roberts rolled their Fiesta following a frustrating mechanical gremlin, which had already dropped the Irishman behind the 1996 British Rally Champion.

At the finish on Scarborough seafront Evans commented, “It was a difficult rally for everyone, It was so easy to make a mistake, but I’ll treasure this win with the others this year. I’m delighted for the JRM team who have all worked really hard all season.”

The victory was Evans’ first on Rally Yorkshire, which has only been part of the championship in its present guise for less than ten years. But it was extra special for BRC returnee and Evan’s third co-driver this season Claire Mole, who chalked up her first ever British Rally Championship event win.

Craig Breen and Gareth Roberts won International Rally NI, part of the Toddsleap.com Ulster Rally by a margin of nearly a minute and a half after two days of competition, not only his debut event win, but the first UK victory for the awesome Fiesta Super 2000.

Keith Cronin and Barry McNulty took second, strengthening their bid for back to back victories in the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship, after a fierce fight with Gwyndaf Evans and Phil Pugh ended when the Welshman hit a wall and cooked the engine.

Cronin’s second place helps Pirelli TEG Sport move back into the lead of the prestigious Dulux Trade MSA Teams Rally Championship as his team-mates Adam Gould and Craig Drew finished the event in a creditable fourth place.

Sandwiched between Cronin and Gould, respectively current and past winners of the Pirelli Star Driver competition, were Alastair Fisher and Rory Kennedy. The local crew had a frustratingly lonely rally, the youngster unable to find the last ounce of commitment on the ultra fast sections, but sufficiently quick to take top Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge honours.

Taking the Pirelli Star Driver nomination on Rally NI was absolute newcomer to the championship. Having registered before the last round, Rally Isle of Man Irish duo Daniel McKenna and his co-driver Andrew Grennan set some excellent stage times, beating Fisher on several of the two days’ stages. Despite retiring on the penultimate stage, his performance was all the more impressive as the event was his first in a four wheel drive car, the Mitsubishi Evo 9 hired just for this event.

Still leading the championship and still surprised to be doing so was Jonny Greer. Who, ably guided by Dai Roberts, finished sixth registered driver despite a broken gear linkage on the final stage.

Certainly worthy of note, although not registered for the Dulux Trade BRC, was Frenchman Bryan Bouffier, who finished first two wheel drive and fifth overall on the stunning Citroën DS3 R3 rally car’s International debut. The car ran faultlessly and could be a force to be reckoned with in next year’s championship.

Leading championship two wheel drive runners were Elfyn Evans and Andrew Edwards who survived a notchy gearbox late on to take not only seventh place of the DTBRC crews, but secure maximum points in the Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy. The sixth straight win is more than enough to seal the series for the youngster who only needed a single point to take the title.

Also running in the Rally 2 class were top placed Citroën racing Trophy crew Mark Donnelly and Aiden Friel who kept their heads while many of the other one-make series runners lost theirs. They counted themselves lucky though to be at the Antrim finish having suffered a total electrical shutdown and subsequent misfire on the final stage.

The sole finisher in the Swift Sport Cup was Tom Clark with new co-driver Chris Brooks. They had a fraught weekend, using three gearboxes in their Suzuki and forced to use Super Rally to re-start on Saturday when the second replacement proved time-consuming to change.

The only registered finishers in the Rally 3 class were yet again brothers Steve and Tony Graham, who nursed their diesel Astra round on Saturday with a standard differential, their competition one uncharacteristically failing.

Cronin makes it two apiece on Rally Isle of Man

Pirelli TEG Sport crew Keith Cronin and Barry McNulty took a well deserved victory on Rally Isle of Man, the fourth round of the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship, making it two wins apiece for them and second placed Gwyndaf Evans with new co-driver Gareth Roberts.

Any chance of a close battle was ended on Friday after JR Motorsports’ Evans lost two minutes with an off, but Cronin drove a mature second day despite some atrocious weather in the middle of Saturday.

Third place went to Jason Pritchard and Robbie Durant, an excellent drive on the Welsh youngster’s first season in a four wheel drive car, to put him on the podium for the first time.

The weather undoubtedly played a major part in all the crews’ experience on the Manx roads every driver having tales of aquaplaning and near misses on roads that resembled rivers in places.

As the event started Alastair Fisher and Rory Kennedy set the initial pace on the first stage which started in foggy conditions straight out of the famous TT pitlane, but there was a gap of less than a second to JR Motorsports’ Evans after less than a mile of competition. Reigning champion Keith Cronin and Barry McNulty were back in eighth, albeit only three seconds adrift of the leaders.

As the drivers settled in Evans pulled clear, leaving Fisher third behind Cronin, but after the first service Cronin launched a fight back, closing to within five seconds of the Welshman after his Mitsubishi’s rear suspension lost alignment. The final stage before second service would prove time-consuming for Evans, caught out on a slippery section, the already wayward car spun and clouted a bank, further damaging the rear right hand wheel alignment.

His accident cost him nearly two minutes, handing the lead to Cronin, but further drama unfolded behind as Fisher crashed heavily, stopping he stage. The crew was unhurt but it meant everybody else was awarded Cronin’s time, leaving Evans seventh.

Cronin’s Pirelli TEG Sport team-mates Adam Gould/Robbie Durant were elevated to second despite a persistent misfire and they responded with a fastest time on stage seven. However their excellent run in last year’s event winning Impreza was cruelly cut short on the very next stage, when they hit a post and damaged the radiator. The crew managed to make the stage finish and attempted to fix the damage, but without spares had to admit defeat.

Jason Pritchard and Craig Drew were therefore elevated to a career best second in their first season in a four wheel drive car, having passed championship leader Jonny Greer/Gordon Noble who struggled with a broken front shock absorber.

Unfortunately for Pritchard fellow Welshman Evans was on a charge and he passed them on the first of the four stage run to the overnight halt, including two through the famous Castletown spectator test.

Greer hung onto fourth and best of the Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge runners. The young Northern Irishman still leads the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship but Evans has closed the gap to just four points before dropped scores

A delighted Gwyndaf Evans and Chris Patterson broke their Jim Clark International Rally duck in style this weekend, taking victory on the all asphalt third round of the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship.

The fifty year old Welshman proved he still has the hunger for victory by bouncing back from a double puncture on Saturday evening, the 1996 British Rally Champion also surviving a high speed moment on Saturday afternoon. At the finish in Duns he offered his thanks to a strategically placed telegraph pole, which while damaging the rear of his JR Motorsports Mitsubishi Evo 10, helped keep both car and crew on the road at around 100 mph

The sting in the tail of the Pirelli International Rally, the second round of the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship, promoted Gwyndaf Evans and Chris Patterson to the top step of the podium in their JRM-run Mitsubishi Evo X, Evans’ first win on the event since 1998 when he was victorious in a two wheel drive Ibiza.

Pirelli TEG Sport crew Mark Higgins and Bryan Thomas took a lonely victory on this weekend’s Toddsleap.com Ulster International Rally, the fifth round of the MSA British Rally Championship.

Their eventual winning margin of nearly three minutes from local youngster Alastair Fisher, partnered by Higgins’ former co-driver Rory Kennedy, certainly does not tell the whole story though, as the event was full of intrigue from the start.

Pirelli TEG Sport’s Mark Higgins and Bryan Thomas have taken an historic victory on the 46th Rally Isle of Man, the fourth round of the MSA British Rally Championship.

Higgins’ win makes him not only the most successful driver in the event’s history, the only person to have won here five times, but it puts him and Keith Cronin level at points at the head of the British Rally Championship points standings.

“It has been the most difficult and hard fought event I can remember,” he said at the Douglas TT Grandstand finish. “It was great to win here last year and add Rory (Kennedy’s) name to the trophy, but this is fantastic, especially as Bryan now has four wins, equal to Derek Ringer.”
